# Connect and use Google Tag Manager

> Connect Google Tag Manager to Nerve, confirm the correct account or property, and start with a scoped read-only request before broader analysis.

Connect Google Tag Manager to inspect accounts, containers, workspaces, tags, triggers, variables, and versions. Use inspection to understand tracking before considering changes.

## Before you connect

Use a Google identity with access to the required Tag Manager container. Know the container and workspace names, and whether you want to inspect a workspace or a published version.

## Connect and verify

1. In the intended workspace, open **Get started > Connect accounts**.
2. Find **Tag Manager** and choose **Connect**.
3. Complete the provider sign-in and review the permissions shown. Select an identity with access to the intended container.
4. Back in Nerve, check the connection status and use **Verify** if available.
5. Ask your assistant to list accessible Tag Manager accounts, containers, and workspaces before requesting a report.

## What to ask Nerve

Live discovery returned account and container inspection, workspaces, versions, tags, triggers, and variables. Ask for a tracking inventory that distinguishes current workspace configuration from published versions. Discovery of a tag does not establish that it fires correctly on a live site.

```text theme={null}
For the Example Brand Tag Manager container, list its workspaces
and available versions. Inspect the selected workspace and summarize
tags, triggers, and variables related to lead tracking. Separate
configuration findings from firing evidence. Do not edit or publish.
```

## Check scope and limits

A Tag Manager workspace is inside a container; it is different from a Nerve workspace. Identify both when working across clients. If an assistant search does not find tools, ask it to search for Google Tag Manager or GTM by name. Keep publication and configuration changes outside a read-only audit.
